Quiz:
What is your slant on life?
- 5 Quick Questions
to
identify the "Can Do" employee.
This month we will explore the
meaning of the slant of your writing. For more on variable slant read this
month’s article “What is your expression?”
- Does your writing slant to the right and a strong
angle, 75 degrees from upright or more?
A far
right slant is someone who expresses their feelings freely. This can be
good in some situations, but can also be inappropriate in others. If this
is you slant, take control and make sure you keep a lid on over
expressiveness
especially in business or at work.
- Does your writing slant to the right at a mild
angle, less than 75 degrees from upright?
This is
considered to be the most adaptable, acceptable slant in most situations.
It allows the writer to show quick sympathy and warmth, while not becoming
overly emotional.
- Is your writing upright?
I call
this the “air traffic controller syndrome” and if you are an air traffic
controller this is a great trait to have! It’s also great in any very
emotional situation where it’s important to keep your cool. However, people
with an upright slant can have difficulty expressing their feelings, and can
bottle things up over time, resulting in eventual explosions. It is a good
idea for upright writers to consciously allow themselves to express how they
feel on a regular basis, whether that be to someone else or just to
themselves.
Journaling
can help, and when all else fails, a good cry can
work wonders.
- Does your writing have a slight backhand slant, that
is, does it slant towards the left by 25 degrees or less past upright?
A light
backhand slant is someone who hold their feeling in temporarily, sometimes
intentionally. It is healthier to express feelings, so read #3 above, as
the same solutions work for you.
- Does your writing have a strong backhand slant, more
than 25 degrees past upright?
A strong
backhand slant is an indication of shutting off your emotions from the
outside world, and sometimes putting yourself in denial also. The tips
above in #3 can help, but also, working to write with less of a backhand
slant, continuously until it becomes natural is a great idea. People with
this slant often find others less than open with them, and it is usually
because others can feel the repression of feelings and, not knowing where
it’s coming from or why, they tend to hold back their own when dealing with
the backhand writer.

What is your expression?
How you
express yourself affects your entire life. It affects how you respond to
others, which in turn affects how others respond to you. By just
understanding where you are at, and where others who are important to you
are at, can make a huge difference.
The
upright writer shows not much emotion. But it is important to understand
that showing and feeling emotion are two different things. The upright
writer, and in fact any, writer can feel feelings just as strong and deeply
as any other writer. They just don’t express them.
They can
come across to others as cold or unfeeling.
The other
thing that can happen with them, is that as unexpressed feeling builds up
and builds up, they eventually reach breaking point. It’s often a case of
the straw that broke the camel’s back. Something not too enormous occurs
and the upright writer just loses it and appears to have an explosion of
temper.
Once it’s
over, it’s over and the upright writer is back to being cool, calm and
collected again – but these explosions can damage relationships. The
solution is to try to
express
things as they happen.
The
farther right the slant, from upright, the more expressive the writer
becomes, until you reach the extreme far right slant-er
who shows far too much emotion much of the time, for the comfort of others.
The back
hand writer is the opposite, holding things in, to the detriment of their
own mental health, and creating difficulties for themselves in
relationships
, where they can appear cold or uninterested.
A slight
right hand slant is considered the most acceptable both in terms of behavior
and mental health. It allows constant, but gentle expression of feelings,
showing warmth but not an excess of emotion.
Variable
slants, at different times, from the same writer is not a problem usually,
as it just means the writer is feeling more or less emotional at that given
time. Some situations create more emotion than others, so this is natural.
However a
widely varied slant within the same sample of writing is of more concern as
it illustrates wide ranging emotional change and lack of
emotional
stability.
Slant is a
“global” trait, which means it effect reaches into all areas of the
personality, and is therefore one of the most important to understand in
understanding the writer.
